Although PowerPoint allows you to choose almost any color you want, it is often difficult to choose the same color for text as the grass or the sky in a picture on the same slide! PowerPoint 2016 for WindowsEyedropper option enables you to pick an exact color from anywhere, sometimes even from somewhere outside PowerPoint! Even better, when you are picking up the color from a source, you get to see the color preview as well as the RGB value of the color you are picking.
In this article, we will explore how you can copy a color from a picture and use it as the fill and outline color of a shape. In the second part of this tutorial, we will explore advanced Eyedropper options such as copying text colors, and also how you can copy color from an object outside PowerPoint.
An Eyedropper is an option that allows picking a specific color from anywhere in PowerPoint, or outside of it, and adding the chosen color to your presentation. Thanks to Eyedropper it is possible to match colors of shapes, objects, backgrounds, and texts throughout the slides and make them look coherent. The eyedropper tool disappears when you move outside the PowerPoint window, but the color will still preview and be matched. Match a color and apply it to the slide background Right-click the slide whose background you want to re-color. It doesn't matter whether you use PowerPoint for Windows, PowerPoint for Mac, or work exclusively with Office 365; these tips will help all users maximize their productivity and success with. Google Slides is a great free tool provided by the Google Suite. But, using a free tool can sometimes come with a trade-off. For instance, if you have been using any other presentation software, you will find yourself searching for the color picker tool in Google Slides! Toggle between the Eyedropper and other tools. For your productive painting pleasure, when you’re using the Brush, Pencil, Color Replacement, Gradient, Paint Bucket, or Shape tool, holding down Alt (Option on the Mac) allows you to temporarily access the Eyedropper tool.
Follow these steps to learn how to use the Eyedropper option to copy colors for shapes:
- Open or create a slide which already has text or shapes, and at least one picture, as you can see in Figure 1.

Figure 3: Shape Fill button- This brings up the Shape Fill drop-down gallery, as shown in Figure 4. Within the drop-down gallery, select the Eyedropper option (see Figure 4 again).
Figure 4: Eyedropper option selected- As soon as the Eyedropper option is selected, the cursor changes to an eyedropper. Place your cursor over the color in the picture which you want to pick as a fill for your shape. As you move your cursor pointer over the color you want to pick you'll see a Live Preview of the color beneath within a square, as you can see highlighted in blue within Figure 5.

Figure 6: Eyedropper cursor showing RGB values of selected color- To apply the selected color as a fill for your shape, just click on the shape. This applies the color to the selected shape, as you can see in Figure 7.

Note that you can easily select multiple shapes and then apply the same fill color to all selected shapes. Figure 8, below shows different colors picked from the picture and applied to shapes as fills.

Just click the downward pointing arrow on the right side of Shape Outline button (highlighted in blue within Figure 3, above). This will bring up the drop-down gallery you see in Figure 10, below. Note: The Drawing Tools Format tab is a Contextual tab. Contextual tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time. They make an appearance only when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using the options within these tabs.
Eyedropper Tool
In the next tutorial of this series, we explore how you can pick colors for text using the Eyedropper option. We also show how you can copy color from outside PowerPoint, such as your desktop, a web site, or anywhere else.
Note: You are not limited to pick colors from the area only within PowerPoint, you can also pick colors anywhere on your screen. To do that after clicking the Eyedropper option, click and hold the mouse button as you drag your mouse to the color you want to pick.

PowerPoint 2013 introduced the Eyedropper, which is included in the color drop-down menu for items like text, shapes, outlines, and more. The steps to match a color using the Eyedropper are available in the video above, or:
- On your slide, select the shape, text, or object that you want to change the color of.
- On the Ribbon, select the color drop-down menu. If you’re changing a shape color, it will be under Format -> Shape Fill; if you’re changing text color, it will be on the Home tab in the text drop-down menu, and so on.
- Click Eyedropper.
- Move the eyedropper over the color area you want to match. You’ll notice the square next to the eyedropper change colors as you move it around the slide.
- Click when you see your desired new color in the square and your shape/text/object will be changed to that color.

Bonus Eyedropper Tip
Once you’re comfortable using the Eyedropper across PowerPoint, break out of the box and use it to match colors external to PowerPoint!
